Vail Resorts, Inc. (NYSE: MTN) (“Vail Resorts”) announced today the appointment of Bobby Murphy as the new vice president and general manager of Stowe Mountain Resort, effective at acquisition close, expected in June.
The 2016-2017 ski season marks Murphy’s 30th year in the ski industry. Spanning three decades, Murphy’s career has demonstrated a commitment to the local resorts and communities where he has worked and resided. Notably, throughout the past 14 years he has brought extensive leadership and innovation at the senior management level to the guest experience and ski area operations.
“Throughout his career, Bobby has played an integral role for cultivating guest services, developing ski and snowboard school experiences and for elevating resort operations,” said Vail Resorts mountain division president, Pat Campbell. “He brings significant industry experience that will benefit both the resort and the greater local community. I’m very pleased to see Bobby in this role and confident he will contribute incredible leadership to Stowe.”
As the current vice president of guest services and ski and snowboard school at Vail Mountain, Murphy leads several departments for one of the largest resorts in North America. He has a deep dedication to the mountain experience and looks to share his passion with guests, employees and communities in Vermont.
“Stowe has a reputation for creating exceptional guest experiences and I look forward to leading and collaborating with the team to build on that reputation.” Murphy said. “Additionally, I’m especially fortunate to be moving to Vermont – an area of the country with a remarkable history within, and connection to, skiing and snowboarding.”
Prior to his role with Vail Mountain, Murphy developed his career throughout several of Colorado’s destination resorts – including Keystone, Telluride and Crested Butte. As a native of Evanston, Ill., his passion for the industry began at Chestnut Mountain. Murphy received his Bachelor of Science degree in Commercial Recreation at the University of Iowa. Additionally, he represented the United States for eight years as a member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) National Alpine Team.
In his free time, Bobby enjoys time with his wife, Jenny, and daughters Ella and Anja. In addition to skiing, he is an avid cyclist and also coaches youth hockey and soccer.
“At acquisition closing, Murphy will be replacing Barry Pius, current president of Stowe Mountain Resort, who has been in that role for nearly two years and was previously the resort’s chief financial officer. Barry has been an incredible partner through this integration and has been an integral part of Stowe for 22 years. We very much appreciate everything Barry has done for the resort and local community,” said Campbell.
