Bahige-Strength in the Storm February’s Survivor Spotlight
Life rarely prepares us for the storms we must endure. For February’s featured survivor, strength has been forged through years of hardship, caregiving, and personal health battles — culminating in a breast cancer diagnosis that tested both her resilience and her spirit.
On June 6, 2025, at the age of 70, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The news came as a complete shock. Yet the diagnosis arrived after years of carrying the emotional weight of traumatic life events that had already pushed her to the limits of endurance.
Several years earlier, her husband suffered a devastating accident that left him with chemical burns covering roughly 25 percent of his body. He spent nearly a month in intensive care undergoing skin graft procedures while she remained by his side throughout the painful recovery.
During his treatment, he was prescribed OxyContin for pain management. Over time, the medication led to a dependency that he never fully recovered from. The addiction quietly consumed him until a severe mental breakdown left him unable to manage his daily life.
For years she became both caregiver and sole provider, carrying responsibilities that many people never have to face alone.
Eventually, the strain began to affect her own health. She started losing vision in one eye and was diagnosed with macular degeneration, creating another layer of emotional and physical stress.
By the time her cancer diagnosis arrived, she had already been living in what she describes as “survival mode” for more than a year.
Treatment required determination and courage. She underwent a lumpectomy followed by radiation therapy and is now continuing her recovery through a five-year course of endocrine therapy designed to reduce the risk of recurrence.
Despite the challenges, she remains committed to maintaining her strength and independence. Regular walks and a focus on staying active help her stay physically and mentally strong.
“I believe in living life fully,” she explains. “Staying healthy and strong gives me hope for the future.”
For survivors like her, the opportunity to step away from treatments, responsibilities, and the emotional weight of illness can be deeply restorative. A healing vacation offers more than rest — it provides time to breathe, reflect, and rebuild strength.
That opportunity is made possible through the work of Send Me On Vacation, whose mission is to provide much-needed vacations for underserved women battling breast cancer who need a place to rejuvenate their body, mind, and spirit.
The organization recognizes that the fight against cancer affects far more than the body. The emotional toll on survivors, their families, and their support systems can be overwhelming. A healing retreat provides survivors with a rare opportunity to step away from the fight and focus on their own recovery and well-being.
For February’s survivor, the possibility of such a retreat represents more than a vacation.
“This vacation would provide the respite I so desperately seek,” she says. “It would give me a chance to restore myself and move forward with renewed hope.”
Through the support of sponsors like Lifestyle Holiday Vacation Club and the mission of Send Me On Vacation, stories like hers continue to remind us that even in life’s fiercest storms, resilience and hope can still shine through.
