Grupo Vidanta Celebrates World Tree Day with Reforestation Initiatives

Deforestation is one of the main threats faced by the world’s ecosystem. In Mexico, around 500,000 hectares of forest are lost annually due to logging to obtain wood and paper. According to the United Nations, Mexico contains roughly 64 million hectares of forest, ranking the country 12th among nations with a major number of trees worldwide, but in the 5th position for illegal logging.

Facing this issue in the context of World Tree Day, Grupo Vidanta follows up on its commitment to environmental protection through reforestation and awareness initiatives in Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit.

Through these activities, Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta looks forward to sharing green practices with children at the Multiple Attention Center No. 15, a special education center at San José del Valle.

“The school has very few plants and trees, so we decided to carry out the activity there,” said Yara Chavarín, Chief of the Certification Department at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta.

At this event, the firm will donate 500 plants and 15 trees for a reforestation activity that will bring together children, parents, teachers, and collaborators. These activities aim not only to improve the image of each specific place, but to spread awareness of the importance of trees and plants in our world.

In its commitment to sustainability, Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta has also opened “Alma Verde”, an organic farm where the resort grows its own produce. The orchard consists of 20 hectares irrigated with 70% of the consumed water in the hotel complex—all of which is processed through the resort’s onsite water treatment plant.

In the middle of the garden, a beautiful 100-year-old Parota tree serves as the farm’s centerpiece and emblem.

Chavarín affirms that the Almaverde project has succeeded in decreasing reliance on cultivated products by up to 20%, thanks to “crop planning based on the demand and consumption,” which not only decreases the resort’s carbon footprint, but also generates new jobs.

This July, Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta will also send a team to the Visitation and Conventions Office (OVC)’s reforestation event, which aims to plant 2,000 saplings in the lateral zones of the highway, town, and communities of the Cruz de Huanacaxtle, as well as at five schools located in La Cruz, Valle Dorado, and Mezcalitos.

Grupo Vidanta code of ethics stresses the importance of working every day towards the well-being of the environment—a practice that, in the case of Nuevo Vallarta, has accomplished a 2% reduction in the consumption of electricity, water, and gas.
