Carl Gould Talks Business Growth on Resort TradesTalk Podcast

Carl Gould, creator of the Seven Stages of Business Success framework, joined host Sharon Scott Wilson, RRP, on the Resort TradesTalk Podcast for a conversation about why some businesses grow and others stall — and what owners can do about it.

Gould keynoted the 2026 GNEX Conference in Nashville and has spent his career advising businesses ranging from startups to established brands. His books include Anatomy of a Comeback, available on Amazon. His forthcoming book, Obnoxious Offers, takes its title from an amusing personal story and is available for pre-order.

Wilson and Gould’s discussion covers practical territory that will resonate with anyone running or working within a resort-related business. One of Gould’s core points is that companies tend to lean on whatever they’re already good at — a great location, a recognizable brand, a high-traffic booking platform — while
letting other areas slide. That works until a competitor decides to get everything right, not just one thing.

He also draws a useful distinction between ‘owning a job’ and building a business.

If the operation depends entirely on the owner showing up, it’s really just self-employment with overhead. A business, in Gould’s view, is something that runs on shared principles and trained people, not on any one person’s constant presence.

One of the more memorable ideas in the episode explains why Gould’s next book is entitled Obnoxious Offer. The concept is simple: are you delivering enough value to justify a premium price? He argues that there’s always a segment of customers who want to be your best customer, who’ll pay more for the upgrade and tell their friends about it. Timeshare and other businesses, he suggests, should make sure that path exists for those buyers.

The conversation is straightforward and moves at a good pace. If you’re a vendor, supplier, or resort professional thinking about how to grow — or wondering why growth has slowed, there are ideas here worth considering. Listen at ResortTrades.com/Resort-Trades-Talk.
