The Power of Partnership in an Evolving Ownership Landscape

A new partnership introduces possibilities. A lasting partnership must demonstrate its relevance over time.

For vacation ownership companies, that relevance increasingly depends on how well the ownership experience accommodates changing travel preferences. The familiar appeal of returning to a favorite resort now sits alongside demand for different destinations, shorter stays and travel options beyond traditional resort accommodations.

Recent developments at RCI illustrate that evolution. In November 2025, the company announced enhancements to its existing cruise program, broadening the travel options available to members. A separate agreement announced in November 2024 extended its credit card relationship with Barclays, which began in 2012. Together, these developments show how exchange companies are supplementing their core resort networks with services intended to support a wider range of travel needs.

For affiliates, the significance of those relationships lies in what they help deliver: benefits owners understand, opportunities they can use and reasons to remain engaged with their ownership.

Why Partners Keep Renewing

The case for continued affiliation has evolved beyond the number of destinations in an exchange directory. Network reach remains important, but so do service, ease of use and the ability to help owners navigate their choices.

RCI’s enhanced cruise offering provides one example of how an exchange relationship can extend beyond resort stays. Its announcement described expanded cruise options and member offers, with availability scheduled to begin in December 2025. The Barclays agreement addresses a different aspect of the member experience, continuing the bank’s role as exclusive issuer of the RCI Elite Rewards World Mastercard.

These arrangements illustrate the scope of the partnership model, although announcements alone do not establish its effectiveness. For an affiliate evaluating renewal, the more useful questions concern results: Are owners using the benefits? Does the relationship help address their travel needs? Is the support making ownership easier to explain, access and enjoy?

Those questions extend across the ownership lifecycle, from the initial sales presentation and onboarding to ongoing engagement. An extensive range of benefits has limited practical value if owners are unaware of it or find it difficult to use.

“Job number one is getting members on vacation. That is how the promise of ownership becomes something tangible,” says David Callaghan, RCI’s Vice President of Business Development. “For RCI, leadership in quality, value and fulfillment means delivering on that promise. Working with our affiliates, we help members understand their options, find vacations that meet their needs and put their ownership to use, year after year.”

The strongest case for renewal, therefore, rests on both continuity and adaptation. Affiliates need confidence in the services their owners already rely on, alongside evidence that the relationship can respond as those owners’ expectations change.

Momentum Across Models

According to RCI, its network includes more than 3,600 affiliated resorts in over 100 countries. That reach gives participating resorts access to a range of destinations that would be difficult for an individual property to assemble independently.

The role of that network varies by ownership model. For an independent resort, exchange can complement the property’s identity and repeat-visit appeal. Eligible owners can return to their home resort or use the exchange process to explore other destinations, subject to the applicable program rules and availability.

For multi-site clubs and branded developers, external exchange can extend travel choices beyond their own portfolios. Incoming exchange guests may also introduce a property to travelers who already have experience with vacation ownership. Whether those visits lead to additional sales depends on the property, the guest and the offering; familiarity with timeshare should not be confused with a demonstrated intention to purchase.

For owners, the broader proposition combines resort exchange with access to additional travel services, including hotels, cruises, activities and car rentals. These options need to be explained clearly: membership access, cash bookings and the use of points or deposited weeks are different mechanisms, and their availability varies by program.

For affiliates, participation can provide another avenue for discovery and guest arrivals. The commercial value depends on how that exposure translates into bookings, owner satisfaction and productive relationships with visitors. Scale creates opportunity. The quality of the experience determines how much of that opportunity is realized.

Upholding the Timeshare Promise, No Matter the Ownership Type

These developments are taking place within an industry that continues to attract buyers and sustain high resort usage. ARDA, the vacation ownership industry’s trade association, reported that U.S. timeshare sales reached $10.7 billion in 2025, following annual increases since 2022. It also reported timeshare occupancy of approximately 80%, compared with roughly 62% for hotels. Those figures provide industry context, although the two accommodation models differ in how stays are purchased and used.

The owner population is changing as well. ARDA’s 2026 United States Owners Report found that Millennials and Gen Z accounted for 58% of owners and 76% of recent timeshare purchases. That shift gives operators reason to examine whether their products, communications and booking experiences serve the expectations of an increasingly diverse ownership base.

Age alone does not determine how someone travels. Some younger owners value the familiarity of an annual resort stay, while longtime owners may want to explore new destinations or vacation formats. The practical challenge is to support both consistency and choice without making ownership more complicated.
Exchange networks can contribute by connecting different ownership models and widening the options available to their members. Their booking and engagement data can also help identify patterns in destination interest, travel timing and benefit usage. When shared with affiliates in useful, actionable form, those insights can inform owner communications and service planning.

Ultimately, the value of the partnership is experienced at the owner level. A deeded interest is not generally renewed each year in the way an affiliation agreement or exchange membership may be, but owners continually assess whether their ownership remains useful and relevant to their lives.

For one household, that may mean returning to the same beach each summer. For another, it may mean using eligible exchange benefits to visit somewhere new, or supplementing resort vacations with other travel options.

The enduring promise of vacation ownership is to make vacations a recurring part of life. Partnerships such as those within RCI’s network can help sustain that promise by connecting the stability of ownership with changing travel needs. Their lasting value is measured in how effectively those connections translate into vacations owners want to take.
