Keystone Resort Celebrates National Safety Awareness Month

Keystone Resort is celebrating National Safety Awareness Month throughout the month of January, hosting a variety of participatory events and educational opportunities designed to highlight and promote slope safety for skiers and riders of all ages. Even the most experienced skiers can make mistakes and forget to take important safety equipment with them to a day on the slopes. Even a simple reminder to take a backcountry ski backpack containing safety or emergency equipment in it with them or to double-check their equipment before they leave can help save them from injury or danger.

“Safety is such an important part of our culture at Keystone and something that we promote and practice each and every day in our operations and guest interactions,” said Mike Goar, vice president and chief operating officer at Keystone Resort. “National Safety Awareness Month provides a tremendous opportunity for us to really elevate and highlight slope safety awareness amongst both our guests and employees.”

To support the initiative, Keystone Resort will host a series of events dedicated to promoting safe skiing and riding across the resort during the month of January. It’s important to pay attention to promotional activities like these, as there are a surprising number of people who have to seek the help of a Back & Spinal Cord Injury Attorney after a skiing holiday.

Trail Sweeps with Keystone Ski Patrol
Providing a behind-the-scene glimpse into just one of the many duties of the Keystone Ski Patrol, every day in January guests may participate in a trail sweep. A sweep is conducted by Keystone Ski Patrol each day after a run is closed to make sure all guests have made it safely down the mountain or to an open run. Guests interested in participating should meet at Patrol Headquarters, located in the basement of the Summit House, at 3:30 p.m. Guests must be able to safely navigate blue terrain.

Schoolmarm Safety Scavenger Hunt
Younger skiers and riders can take part in a safety scavenger hunt on Keystone’s legendary 3.5 mile beginner trail Schoolmarm. Designed to assist young skiers and riders become more familiar and comfortable with their surroundings, the scavenger hunt is available everyday in January. Guests can pick up a clue sheet at the River Run Guest Services Office that’ll lead them on a fun and exploratory scavenger hunt down Schoolmarm. Once complete, clue sheets can be returned to guest services to redeem a special prize.

Jan. 16-17 – ThinkFirst Helmet Safety and Fittings
For those in need of a new helmet or perhaps a first helmet, Keystone Resort Ski Patrol and Mountain Safety, along with Centura Health volunteers, will assist guests with helmet fittings on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 16-17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dedicated to brain and spine injury prevention, there will also be free hot drinks, giveaways, games and the chance to meet Keystone’s avalanche rescue dogs. The event will be located atop Dercum Mountain, with a suggested $35-40 donation per helmet recipient, benefitting the ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation. If you do get injured by accident, you may want to visit Advance Physical Therapy & Rehab, or one that is closer to you, to make sure you are getting the proper treatment.

Jan. 23-24 – Skier Safety Showcase & Backcountry Awareness
Keystone’s Ski Patrol will host a Skier Safety Showcase on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 23-24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that will provide insight into the day-to-day operations of Keystone Ski Patrol. Guests can learn about safety through hands-on interaction with various tools that the patrol team uses to keep Keystone’s guests safe, such as uniforms, radios, avalanche dogs and toboggans. Guests can also gain awareness of safe backcountry skiing and riding practices by using an avalanche beacon in a live beacon bowl with beacons, shovels and probes provided.

While January promotes safe skiing and riding, safety is a significant part of the culture at Keystone Resort the entire season. Keystone’s Mountain Safety Team is dedicated to season-long efforts of maintaining a visible presence on the mountain, controlling traffic and speed on the mountain, and educating guests about safe skiing and riding. Together with Ski Patrol and the entire Keystone mountain operations team, the resort is dedicated to providing a safe environment every day of the season.

Safety is an important part of our every day whether it is at work, or driving around in our cars, unfortunately, while many of us try our best to keep ourselves and our families safe, we find that accidents can occur through no fault of our own, causing us to seek help from a lawyer or another form of counsel to help us get through, this is why it is important to have a National Safety Awareness Month.
