In Memoriam….Jimmy Peters
Jimmy E. Peters of Deland, FL, passed away July 15, 2016 at Halifax Health Hospice in Orange City, FL. He was born July 25, 1942 in Washington, DC to Earl Peters and Frances (Gregory) Peters. He served our country in the United States Army for over 20 years, attaining the rank of Major and receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Expert Infantryman badge, Bronze Star with V and oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 3 Campaign Stars, Combat Infantryman badge, Armed Forces Reserve medal, Good Conduct medal, and 3 Purple Heart Medals. His last military assignment was 3 years at James Madison University as Professor of Military Science. After Jim’s decorated military career, he began a new career in the Timeshare Industry, beginning at Chalet High in Bryce Mountain, VA, followed by his move to Ocean City, MD in 1982 as Project Manager at Ocean High, VP and Manager of Mid-Atlantic Realty in 1985, VP and Manager of Heritage resorts in 1986, Pres/CEO/ Partner at
Shell Heritage Resorts in 1989 and Pres/CEO/Owner of Shenandoah Crossing Resort in VA in 1991. He then moved to Florida in 1992 as VP of Marketing at Island One Resort, followed by Pres/CEO at Silver Lake Resort in 1993, Sr. VP at Orange Lake Resort in 2001, and he finished his successful Timeshare career as Partner of Creative Impact and as Pres/CEO-Owner of J & J Limited, Inc. in Windermere, FL, as consultant to the Timeshare Industry. He was a member of American Resort Development Assoc. in Washington, D.C, serving on the ARDA Board of Directors, the ARDA Intern. Foundation Board of Directors, The ARDA Research Institute Foundation, the ARDA Finance Committee, and ARDA Public Relations Committee.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW, the Disabled American Vets, and the Retired Army Officers. After retirement he was happy to pursue his passion for golf, playing 5-6 times per week. He was a lifetime member of the Windermere, FL Country Club and when he moved to DeLand, FL in 2010, he spearheaded forming a Men’s Golf Group at Victoria Hills Golf Club. In addition to his love for golf, family and friends, he enjoyed many wonderful years of travel with his wife Jenny. He was often praised for his loyalty, his competitive nature, his honesty, his intelligence, and most of all his generosity.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Jenny Peters, his best friend of 30 years; and by his son, David Peters and wife Holly of Midlothian, VA; his son James Peters of Parkville, MD and his stepson Christopher Conner of Gotha, FL. He is also survived by his sisters, Brenda VanArsdale, Elkton, VA; Pat Peters, Staunton, VA; and Linda Harris and husband Jerry, Troy, VA. He leaves behind his grandchildren Peyton and Reagan Peters and Avery and Owen Peters.
Internment with Full Military Honors were held Friday, August 12th at 11:00 am at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida, followed by a private family Celebration of Life luncheon at the home of Jim and Joanne Denny at Villages, FL. Donations may be made to Halifax Health Hospice or your local animal shelter/pet rescue in honor of Jim.
